Discover some friendly and not-so-friendly ghosts on these spine-tingling tours out of Newport this year. THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT TOURS WHICH LEAVE ON ALTERNATE WEEKS.
Your guide will try not to scare you witless, but be prepared to see sights you never thought you would, and for some shocking true tales about some of the Island's phantoms and poltergeists. There will be plenty to scream about as we introduce you to the darker side of Wight, this Island of Ghosts, with chilling legends and decidedly dark deeds.
TOUR ONE
Did you know about the 'living dead' in County Hall (the ghosts that is), or the things that go bump in the night where a servant was burned to death in the old lace factory in Staplers Road? What about Micah Morey, the murderous woodcutter, gibbeted at the Hare and Hounds, whose restless spirit still walks at Gallows Hill.
See the ghostly gateposts of Knighton Gorges, perhaps the Island's most haunted place, and hear of the mysterious mansion said to reappear there every New Year's Eve. Discover how the village of Godshill got its name... and watch out for that ghostly Cavalier horseman riding by. Learn what went on in the Island's old Asylum at Whitecroft,
and see where the last duel was fought at Carisbrooke Castle. And why is a man with no face, wearing a raincoat, waiting at a deserted bus stop? Has it just gone icy cold or is it your imagination?
Find out more on the open-top Ghost Bus Tour, although you'll probably end up with more questions than answers. We just hope you sleep well afterwards . . . but leave the light on, just in case!
TOUR TWO
This tour takes you around the notorious Back of the Wight, where you will hear tales of dark deeds, foul murders, shipwrecks, desperate smugglers and wreckers who lured ships to their doom... and the ghosts of their victims who still walk the lonely West Wight beaches at dead of night.
But before all that you will see a haunted graveyard and hear what loiters behind the tombs. Then be prepared to meet the ghost of poor unfortunate Buxom Betty, murdered by smugglers after she betrayed them. Her spirit is seen at the lonely Blacksmiths Arms Inn and walks in Betty Haunt Lane. Learn about one of the Island's worst air disasters and where one of the victims still haunts the mortuary where bodies were taken.
At Freshwater Bay you will be introduced to the ghost of Julia Margaret Cameron, pioneer Victorian photographer and friend of Tennyson, who still haunts here old home at Dimbola Lodge. See those haunted beaches and the magnificent scenery as the ghostbus takes you along the Military Road.
See haunted pubs and learn what spirits are lurking there. Tales of witchcraft, sacrifice and the supernatural abound at the Neolithic Longstone at Mottistone.
Join this tour if you want some very strange and chilling tales indeed....
The Ghostbus departs from Newport Bus Station every Wednesday evening at 8pm. This open top bus tour lasts between an hour and a half to two hours (no getting off on the way round - however scared you are!)
And when you leave the ghostbus to go home, in the dark, we wish you very pleasant dreams......
Hi Marc. Me and my wife Becca are on the IW for our honeymoon and did your ghostbus yesterday. Even with the freezing cold it was a fantastic tour.
We have done a few investigations on the mainland and hope to do one here next time we visit. We will be coming for the ghost walk on Saturday. We look forward to learning more about the ghosts of the iow. Thank you again for a great bus tour and hope it is a great hit.
